The Spade, Rock, and Kobe Courtside Story

Rich brought up the clip that floats around the internet every few months, David Spade and Chris Rock sitting courtside at a Lakers game, leaning over toward Kobe Bryant, and Kobe completely ignoring them.

Spade knew exactly which moment Rich meant before Rich finished asking.

He set the scene. He and Chris Rock were at the game together. Kobe was a friend. The seats come through William Morris, agency seats, front row on the Lakers bench, the kind where the chairs back up against the players' chairs. Spade and Rock would switch spots at halftime so each got a turn sitting next to the players.

That night, one of them ended up next to Kobe.

Rich asked what Chris Rock was actually saying in the clip. The line everyone tries to lip-read is "you want to pace it out." Spade said Rock was basically giving Kobe a pep talk. Not advice. Just riffing. Being funny. Spade compared it to trying to talk to a comedian mid-set. The guy is in the zone. He's not listening.

Kobe wasn't listening.

Spade said he loves the clip for exactly that reason. Rock is cracking jokes, throwing out fake tips, and Kobe is staring straight ahead, locked in. Spade said he thinks the moment happened late in the game, maybe 10 seconds left, the Lakers mapping out how to get the ball to Kobe. Kobe had a job to do.

Rich asked if Spade was also talking at Kobe. Spade said yes, but added that Kobe was definitely not listening to him. He thought Rock at least had a chance.

Spade's aside about the seats landed honest. Those floor seats are technically the best in the house. They're also too close. Spade said if he were the one playing, he wouldn't want someone that close to him either. For the fan, it's a gift. For the player, he said, it's probably horrible.

Did Kobe say anything the rest of the night? Spade said Kobe was nice when things calmed down. But in that stretch, with the clock winding and the play being drawn up for him, Kobe was busy.

The clip keeps traveling because it's a snapshot of two different jobs happening at the exact same moment. A comedian doing what comedians do. An athlete doing what Kobe did.
