David Spade Talks Bus Boys and Kobe

David Spade stopped by in an F1 sweater to promote his new comedy Bus Boys, in theaters April 17. The logline: a pair of idiot friends believe that if they become waiters, all of their problems will be solved. Spade co-stars with Theo Von and Jay Pharoah, with Chris Elliott playing their boss. Spade pitched it as an R-rated non-PC comedy in the style of the '90s films he and Rich grew up on.

Spade told the story of first meeting Dana Carvey. He'd been kicked out of an apartment and was sitting in the hallway when Kevin Nealon offered him a room in a house where Carvey lived above the garage. When SNL brought Spade in, he later heard it was partly to light a fire under Carvey, "We've got one just like you." He spent a long stretch on the bench waiting for the Church Lady to slow down.

Rich pressed Spade on the famous Chris Rock-Kobe Bryant courtside clip. They sat William Morris seats on the floor. Spade's friend, director David O. Russell, once got hit so hard the Lakers had to take him to their in-house medical center. In the viral moment, Rock was just being funny, throwing out pep-talk bits like "You got to pace it out." Kobe was locked in and wouldn't acknowledge him. Spade says Kobe was nice when play was calm, but with ten seconds left they were drawing up a Kobe isolation.

Spade explained his SNL Weekend Update niche: Hollywood Minute, where he took the opposite tack of People magazine's celebrity butt-kissing. Lorne Michaels told him to keep doing it. He did it for a year or two until he'd made two movies and was officially one of them.

Rich asked about Kyler Murray's reputation for not reading the playbook on an iPad. Spade's defense: when he does a movie, producers love it when he reads the script, but they don't insist. He's read his. He did wonder if the Cardinals will draft their next quarterback this weekend.

Spade plugs Netflix Is a Joke Fest on May 6 at the Orpheum, Fly on the Wall live with Dana Carvey and Chris Rock. Outcome, with Jonah Hill and Keanu Reeves, is available on Apple TV. He closed the visit talking about his road stops in Nashville, Pittsburgh for the draft, and Charlotte.
