Rich Eisen Would be Shocked If CJ Stroud Doesn’t Get a Big Texans Extension before the 2026 Season

CJ Stroud's Extension Is Coming

Rich laid out the Nick Caserio dream. The Texans GM operates out of the New England Patriots playbook, meaning he moves off players before they reach their point of no return. Even if there is a year or two of runway left. Caserio is, in Rich's phrasing, the Val Kilmer from Tombstone of NFL general managers, a hero without a cape.

The setup was CJ Stroud. Three years in. Three playoff appearances. A playoff win in each of those three years. The fifth-year option picked up. No contract extension yet. Chris Brockman read that as a potential tell. Rich read it as a procedural move and nothing more.

Caserio was asked directly, before the draft, whether the lack of a new extension signals doubt about Stroud's future in Houston. His answer was flat. He does not think it affects his future. Stroud is their quarterback. He and the head coach have said it from the beginning. Picking up the option was not a no-brainer, but it was kind of a no-brainer. Stroud has had a good off-season approach.

Rich read the body language. Twitchy hand movement, shoulder shrugs, staccato responses. Translation, nothing to see here, stop asking, I am not going to negotiate in public. Rich pegged Stroud as the first quarterback to break $60 million a year before Dak Prescott did it. Brockman thinks Stroud needs to play out year four and pointed to the Pittsburgh Steelers, a team with zero quarterback plan, as a potential landing spot after next season.

Rich was having none of it. When Brockman's son is in middle school, CJ Stroud will still be the quarterback of the Houston Texans. Please write this down. Cut this video. The pick up of the option at roughly $25 million is Malik Willis money. Stroud is not playing the fifth year at that number.

The complication sitting in the background is Will Anderson. The defensive end at his position is elite. Stroud, Brockman argued, is not yet elite at his. Will Anderson is about to make a mint, maybe a contract starting with a five. That is a hard truth to deliver to your franchise quarterback.

Rich would be shocked if Stroud does not get a big extension before the 2026 season. The body language from Caserio sealed it. Nothing to see here. Move on.
