Chiefs Bullish on Mahomes Return

The owners meetings produced the first Andy Reid availability since the week 18 Zoom exit interviews, and the first question that matters is about Patrick Mahomes' knee. Mahomes tore his ACL and MCL in Week 15. A week before the meetings he posted a clip of himself working out, fading back, bouncing on the repaired leg. Reid's answer was the one Kansas City wanted to hear.

He's doing good. It's hard to measure whether he is ahead of schedule, Reid said, because every player is different and nobody owns the schedule. But he would never bet against Mahomes. The time and effort is always there. So far everything has been positive. He is starting Week 1.

Rich frames the subtext. That is exactly why Mahomes posted the workout clip. A signal that he is working, a reminder that he is coming, a don't-forget-about-me moment from a quarterback who does not actually need those moments. Mahomes is the greatest quarterback ever before turning 30, matching and surpassing Brady's marks at the same age. The metrics are settled.

The question now is the next iteration of the dynasty. Last year ended in the AFC Championship overtime loss, the earliest Mahomes had been eliminated as a starter. Why else post the video if not to answer that? The Chiefs have two first round picks coming up. Rich flags it as a conversation for when Matt Miller joins the show. Do they hit the defense? Do they add a weapon? Kelce is back on a deal structured more like a series of one-year extensions than a real three-year commitment.

One of the more quiet additions matters here. Kenneth Walker gives Kansas City a run game presence they have not had. Mahomes has not had a thousand-yard rusher behind him since Kareem Hunt's rookie year, which is staggering given the length of the run. Walker is the way back to an offense that does not live or die on Mahomes' shoulders. Don't throw it as much. Don't rely on him running himself into traffic.

Reid offered the bare minimum and the maximum at the same time. Positive progress. Starting Week 1. That is the headline. And it is exactly what Mahomes was hoping his offseason clip would force everyone to say out loud.
