Chris Pronger told Rich the story of winning the Stanley Cup in Anaheim, a punchline on its own for a kid from Canada. When Pronger was drafted, Anaheim was in its first year as a franchise. He, Rob Niedermayer, and Chris Gratton went to Disneyland to promote the team. Fourteen years later he won the Cup with them.
The party he threw afterward became a story of its own. Pronger lived in Shady Canyon in California. He hired Sugar Ray to play his house, they're from Newport Beach, it tracked. He had them set up by the pool. Then he took his subterranean garage, blacked it out, brought in a DJ, and built a club under the house.
Things got loose. Around 2 in the morning, Pronger went upstairs to grab a bottle of wine. His party planner came running up: "Chris, the cops are here." His response: "Bring them in."
He took the officers downstairs, got a photo with the Cup, did the full hang. They asked him to turn the music down. He said yes. They left. He cranked it right back up.
The capper: it took the cops three hours to find his house. The canyon bounced the bass off his garage and echoed it across the 405 freeway. Police were across the freeway looking for the source the whole time.
