Chace Crawford Talks Prime Video’s ‘The Boys’ Final Season & More with Rich

Chace Crawford joined The Rich Eisen Show for a long-form sit-down about The Boys, the Cowboys, Rory McIlroy and his next swing at football television. The fifth and final season of The Boys is rolling out new episodes Wednesdays on Prime Video, with the series finale set for May 20.

Crawford said he is going to miss the show. Five seasons over seven years. He gave the writers credit for landing the plane this season and praised Amazon for taking the swing in the first place. He remembered reading the breakdown email and seeing Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg attached. The pitch was simple. Marvel, but real, with the superheroes as celebrities contracted to cities.

The audition scenes told him this was something different. One was The Deep in a therapist's office, talking about being friends with a local lobster. The other was a confrontational scene with Starlight. Crawford said he thought it was super interesting, dark and satirical, and was genuinely surprised Amazon ordered all eight episodes.

Rich described the show as a society where superheroes have no conscience whatsoever. He brought up the moment Jack Quaid's character and his girlfriend get mowed down by a Train and said no show makes him say holy you-know-what out loud more than this one. Crawford agreed and said every season he hits a script and asks if the producers really expect him to do that, then realizes the answer is yes.

The character of The Deep, Crawford said, was brilliant on the page. Rich called him an Aquaman with no moral compass and a sex addiction. Crawford added a Zoolander layer. The fake commercials and Lifetime movies the show built around The Deep were some of his favorite material to shoot.

On Anthony Starr's Homelander, Crawford said the casting came together off a single tape. The meme of Homelander shifting from shock to a performed smile, he said, still circulates in his group texts.

Football got its share of the segment. Crawford is a lifelong Cowboys fan with photos of him and his sister in starter jackets from 1994. His brother-in-law is Tony Romo. Crawford said watching Romo play was like a drug. Rich asked what Romo's superpower would be. Crawford said it would be hyping things up at a dinner party.

There was a story about a round of golf with Rory McIlroy at Pine Tree. The format was a shamble. The team played off the longest drive, then each player played their own ball. They used McIlroy's drive every time. The exception was a 115-yard par three where Crawford stuck a sand wedge dead. McIlroy went long by ten yards. Crawford threw the dart and they used his ball.

McIlroy, Crawford said, could not have been a better hang. Two green jackets now, and Crawford said this was house money for him after the Masters and the career grand slam came off his back.

The last beat was Crawford's next role. He plays the GM of the Cleveland Browns in Dan Fogelman's NFL-adjacent show The Land for Hulu, with Christopher Meloni as the head coach and William H. Macy as the owner. Crawford said the Meloni performance is awesome and that he modeled the GM as a young Les Snead type. The show shot scenes at the actual NFL Draft, including Roger Goodell announcing a fake Browns quarterback pick at an empty Radio City Music Hall in Pittsburgh. The Steelers fans nearby booed the helmet on instinct.

The final season of The Boys ends May 20. The Land is up next.
