Will Kirk Cousins Be the Raiders Week 1 Starter??

Cousins as Raiders Week 1 Starter

The reporting is pointing one direction. Kirk Cousins is the most likely Week 1 starter for the Las Vegas Raiders. That is the read from the insider on set, based on weeks of background conversations and matched up against what new head coach Chip Kubiak told the media at his owners meeting breakfast.

Kubiak's preference is clear. In a perfect world, the rookie sits. Fernando Mendoza is coming from a vastly different system, one where he was not under center, did not have to turn his back to the line of scrimmage on play action, and has not been asked to run the fundamentals Kubiak wants at the heart of his offense. The learning curve is real. The question is how fast Mendoza accelerates.

Cousins gives the Raiders a fallback, and the framing is more than fallback. He is a bridge, the way Tyler Linderbaum is a bridge at center. The roster is still being built. Ashton Jeanty and Brock Bowers are real pieces. Linderbaum solidifies the middle of the line. But the Raiders know they have more work to do at wide receiver and along the front. Signing Cousins is about protecting whoever plays quarterback in year one.

The money matters. Cousins is on the books for 11.3 million in 2026 regardless of snaps. That structure, different from the pure minimum deals Tua and Kyler Murray took elsewhere, makes him impossible to cut and unlikely to be traded this year. He is on the roster.

The runway is still long. We are five months from Week 1. There is a draft to get through. There will be additional free agent moves. There could be trades. If Mendoza lights up the preseason, the Raiders can flip the plan and start him out of the gate. But the most likely outcome today is Cousins taking the first snap, with Mendoza's development and his own play determining how long that lasts.
