Mike Mayock walked through his evaluation of Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, and the headline was not the physical tools. The headline was concern about the draft mechanism that pushes one-year starters into the first round before they are ready.
Mayock started by crediting the tape. Simpson is 6'1", 212, with a good arm that can drive the ball outside and deep. His feet are quick. His eyes and feet are tied together, which Mayock considers one of the most important traits for a young passer. He knows how to take care of the football. Mayock said he liked Simpson more than he thought he would.
Then came the warning. Mayock hates killing a prospect because others have failed in similar shoes, but he cited the abysmal history of first-round quarterbacks who played one season or less in college. The NFL pushes these players up and forces them to play too early. Mayock said plainly that Simpson is a player he is very worried about.
His ideal landing spot was specific. Second round, to the Los Angeles Rams, sitting behind Matthew Stafford for two years. Under that scenario it would be all systems go. Mayock's worry is the opposite scenario. Will a team push Simpson up into the first round? Will his hometown Tennessee Titans take him at 16? Geno Smith is a bridge quarterback, but Mayock flagged the pressure that mounts when losses start piling up and the fanbase wants the rookie.
Mayock grouped Simpson's skill set with Bo Nix and Jackson Dart in the same range. He had second-round grades on all three. He acknowledged he was too low on the two currently in the league, then returned to his core point. The situation a quarterback lands in matters more than the height of the selection. Going as high as you can go is not the goal. Landing in the right room with the right bridge starter and the right coordinator is the goal.
The frame from Mayock was less about Simpson the player and more about a structural problem in how the league drafts the position. Talent gets rushed. Careers get decided by fit and timing, not ceiling.
