Why Colts GM Chris Ballard Was Happy to Overpay to Keep WR Alec Pierce in Indy

Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard joined The Rich Eisen Show and was immediately handed one of the popular media takes about his offseason: that the Colts overpaid to keep wide receiver Alec Pierce in Indy.

Ballard pushed back without flinching.

If the Colts overpaid, Ballard said, then a lot of other teams would have overpaid too. Pierce was excellent. And in his estimation, you cannot overpay a good player.

Rich pressed for the why. What did Ballard see in Pierce that made the long-term commitment worth it, knowing Pierce was about to hit the open market and that other teams might match or exceed Indianapolis on price?

The answer started in Pierce's first two years, where Ballard said the team saw what he could do vertically. Pierce could win down the field. That was already on tape.

The inflection point came after the Colts drafted AD Mitchell, who is now in New York and who Ballard expects to do well there. Pierce came into Ballard's office and asked what the new pick meant for him.

Ballard's response, by his own retelling, was blunt. Nothing. It means nothing. Go to work. Things work out for guys who work and produce.

That is exactly what Pierce did, Ballard said. He never complained. He was unselfish. And he worked on his whole game. Ballard gave a chunk of credit to Reggie Wayne for the development on the practice field.

The result is a receiver who can still beat defensive backs vertically but can now win on every level. That, Ballard explained, is what made Pierce more dangerous and more consistent. Pierce became harder to defend because he was no longer a one-trick option.

Then there is the production. Ballard pointed out that averaging more than 20 yards per catch in the NFL is hard. Pierce has done it for two consecutive years. And in moments where the Colts needed an explosive play, Ballard said, Pierce is the guy who came up big.

That is the case for the contract. Vertical threat plus expanded route tree plus consistent big plays equals a player worth the number, even if the number raises eyebrows.

Before Ballard wrapped, Rich asked about the backup quarterback situation, specifically Anthony Richardson. Ballard's update was short and noncommittal. Nothing yet. Richardson is still a Colt as of right now. The team will continue to work through it.

Ballard also flagged Riley Leonard, who he said did well last year, as part of the room. So the Colts will work through Richardson's situation as the offseason continues, but there is no resolution to announce.

The headline from the segment was the philosophy as much as the player. Ballard's line about not being able to overpay a good player is the entire framework of why Indianapolis paid Alec Pierce what they did, and it is the line he is going to keep repeating any time someone runs the overpay take back at him.
