Zach Galifianakis and the Phantom Scholarship

Zach Galifianakis walks into the sports conversation by offering what he has. His dad played scholarship football at NC State. That is about it for the sports resume.

And then, unprompted, he reveals he got a soccer scholarship. Rich stops the show. Where. Galifianakis, 56 years old, is not sure anymore. He thinks he may have made this up in his own mind over the years. He has been telling the story for so long he cannot tell what is real.

The outline he remembers is this. He was not even good, but he got two soccer scholarship offers. One school's mascot was, he thinks, a brined cucumber. He decided he could not go play for that mascot. He just could not. Rich points out that this should be easily findable. Galifianakis suggests the school was Mount Olive College. Mount Olive, as in the famous brand. The preserved cucumber company.

Rich does a live search. Mount Olive College is actually called the Trojans. So maybe the mascot thing got misfiled in memory. Then Galifianakis brings up North Carolina School of the Arts, which his mom wanted him to attend. Turns out, per the search, North Carolina School of the Arts mascot is literally the Fighting Brined Cucumbers. The detail wire gets crossed. Somewhere in the mental archive, a real cucumber mascot existed, just attached to a different school. The other offer he thinks came from Coastal Carolina in Myrtle Beach.

Rich, in full bit mode, calls this the greatest sports story the program has ever heard. Galifianakis stands by it, sort of. Why would I make that story up, he asks. He thinks he kept the letters. He would have to go through his archives.

Galifianakis played left wing. He is right footed. Rich laughs at the absurdity of a right footed left winger. Galifianakis shrugs. We were a bunch of hillbillies, he says, we worked with what we had.

The closer is quieter. Galifianakis wonders out loud if the whole scholarship thing was him trying to compete with his father. His dad did not know anything about soccer. He loved his dad. He was a good man. Rich lets the moment sit.

The bit works because Galifianakis is genuinely uncertain whether the story is real. No bit. No polish. Just a 56 year old comedian searching his own archive on camera and finding a hole where a verified fact should be.
