Cowboys Trade-Up Math for Sonny Styles

Dane Brugler's read on this draft is not that it is thin overall. It is that the top of the board is thin at the positions front offices are comfortable spending a top-ten pick on. The talent is there. The positional fit is the problem.

Caleb Downs and Sonny Styles are the cleanest examples. Safeties and off-ball linebackers do not usually crack the top five, even when the tape screams that they should. Brugler called this the story of the draft: the non-premium positions, and how teams reconcile evaluations that point up the board with positional value that points down.

Downs is different. The interviews have become their own evaluation. He sits down with teams and walks them through exactly how they run their own scheme, exactly how he would execute inside it. Brugler said Downs speaks the language most college players cannot speak yet. He did not test at the combine or pro day. With him, you trust the tape. The tape does not show a deficient athlete. The intelligence is the separator.

Sonny Styles is where the trade talk starts. Several teams are going to be tempted to move up for him. Brugler specifically pointed at the Cowboys. Dallas does not currently have a linebacker they feel comfortable wearing the green dot. Styles, in Brugler's read, is a near-perfect fit for Christian Parker's defense. The Cowboys have two first-round picks and the ammunition to climb.

The landing spot he floated: pick six. The Browns are always willing to move back. Rich put a pin in it.
