Rich Eisen Weighs In on Fernando Mendoza's Decision to Not Attend the NFL Draft

Why Mendoza Is Skipping the Draft

Fernando Mendoza, widely projected as a top NFL draft selection, has informed the league he will not attend the draft in Pittsburgh. He plans to stay home in Miami with his family, a choice reportedly tied to his mother, who has MS. The decision immediately sparked conversation about what it means for the broadcast, the spectacle, and the league itself.

Rich offered a firm endorsement of Mendoza's call. He framed the decision as 100 percent within the prospect's purview, saying that while everyone would love to see him on the stage, nothing is more special than accommodating his mother and the rest of his family. The point was direct. If his family needs him home, being home is the right answer.

The show noted this is not unheard of, it just rarely happens with the first overall pick. The last number one overall pick to skip the draft was Trevor Lawrence in 2021, who has since become an upstanding pillar of the Jacksonville community and a face of the franchise. The Rich crew also noted the NFL often asks a prospect how many family members they need in attendance, and an answer of 150 would not be unusual.

From there the bit pivoted into a running joke about travel logistics. There is a direct flight from Miami to Las Vegas, the host noted, and private aviation goes everywhere. That prompted a tangent about Maxx Crosby once flying commercial to Washington DC and driving up to Baltimore, a trip the crew still finds confusing given Crosby's bad knees and the roughly two-hour drive from BWI. Rich defended his own preference against bulkhead seating, which drew laughter from the room.

The segment landed on a clean principle. Mendoza's absence from Pittsburgh is not a story about the league losing a moment. It is a story about a young quarterback making the call that fits his family. The cameras will still find him at home the night of the pick, and by the next day he will be in his new city. The draft will go on, plenty of prospects will be there to enjoy the stage, and the league will adjust.

Rich's final note was about the commercial travel saga more than the absence itself. That, he said, was his favorite part of the coverage.
