The breaking news hit the show mid-segment, and the room went quiet fast. Jalen Hurts is out Sunday because of a blood clot, and Rich's first instinct was not football.
"This is like real life serious danger stuff," Rich said.
The details came from Ian Rapoport's report and a lengthy statement from the Eagles, read on air. According to the team, Hurts visited the training room on Thursday, October 8th, asking for treatment on his calf, and told the medical staff he had been cleated during the Rams game on the 4th. Out of an abundance of caution, an ultrasound was performed in London after the team's flight and walk-through. It revealed a superficial blood clot. Doctors concluded that activity and mobility were important and that Hurts could safely play, and he did, without limitation.
Then came the follow-up. A Wednesday night ultrasound "revealed movement in the small blood clot." Hurts will be out Sunday, the statement said, "as we determine the appropriate course of action."
The travel got flagged immediately. Two transatlantic flights in the span of three days "couldn't have helped," the show noted.
The show also pointed to Victor Wembanyama, who had a blood clot in his right shoulder discovered in February of his second season and missed the rest of that season, 30 games. Rich was careful with the comparison. "We're not doctors and blood clots are serious," he said. "This could be completely different."
But his read was clear: "This doesn't sound like a one week thing."
Tanner McKee will start against the Carolina Panthers, and the depth chart behind and around him is a mess. Rich walked through it in disbelief. The Eagles started the season 2-0, then lost to the Bears, lost to the Rams after being up by 10, and lost to Jacksonville while up with eight seconds to go. Now they are staring at a fourth straight loss.
"The letter Q is all over the place for questionable and D for doubtful," Rich said. JaMycal Hasty, hurt in London, is doubtful. So is Will Shipley. Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks are all questionable. On the offensive line, Jordan Mailata is the only starter left from the Super Bowl line 20 months ago, with Willie Lampkin, Drew Kendall, Tyler Steen and Markel Bell around him. Landon Dickerson is on IR, Cam Jurgens was traded, and Lane Johnson has retired.
"Are they going to try and get Vince Papale suited up to try and play this week?" Rich asked. "It's crazy."
Cole Payton is the third-stringer, and the schedule offers no mercy: a Monday night home game against Dallas, a Sunday night trip to Washington, then the Giants. Three straight in the division, two in front of the whole country.
"Their season is in jeopardy," Rich said, before catching himself. "And then you feel silly even talking about it because of the seriousness of Jalen Hurts's malady. It's not an injury."
