No Chance Mendoza Beats Out Cousins

A passionate Raiders fan named Caroline called in from South Carolina demanding Fernando Mendoza start week one if Las Vegas takes him No. 1 overall. She dropped more than a few words that slipped past the dump button in Bristol. Rich's response was measured. Mendoza is a great prospect. That doesn't mean he should start day one.

Rich pointed back to Matthew Hasselbeck's line from earlier in the week: no quarterback should see the field until they've mastered third-down protection, knowing how to protect themselves and set things up pre-snap. Until that's there, you stay on the sideline. Mendoza beat some real professional football players at Indiana, including three Ohio State defenders likely headed for the top 10, Arvell Reese, Caleb Downs, Sunny Styles. That doesn't mean he's ready for an NFL third-and-long.

Rich's bigger point: that's exactly why Kirk Cousins is in Las Vegas. Not as a mentor in the locker room. As real competition. Cousins spoke to the media Wednesday and said the right things, if he's the best option, he wants to play; if he isn't, he shouldn't be out there. Rich didn't read that as hand-off language. He read it as Cousins believing he can win the job.

The Cousins career arc got a full rewind. Washington drafted RG3 second overall, then grabbed Cousins in the fourth round the next day. Rich remembered sitting with Mike Mayock wondering why they'd hedge their first overall quarterback with another quarterback pick. Turned out the Shanahans wanted Cousins all along. Later the Falcons paid Cousins to start and then drafted Michael Penix Jr. eighth overall in 2024. Cousins got benched. Now he's in Vegas, knowing a rookie is coming.

Rich's prediction: in open competition, there's no chance a kid who's never taken an NFL snap beats out a 14-year veteran neck-up. Not physically, neck-up. The processing, the protections, the pre-snap reads. The Raiders will put a thumb on the scale if they want Mendoza to win. But if they don't, Cousins wins the job.

Rich tossed in the J.J. McCarthy note, benching a No. 1 pick is embarrassing but survivable. Bryce Young is the proof of concept. Waiting works better than starting early and regretting it.
