Rich walks the halls of his old ESPN stomping grounds, narrating a tour through the spaces where his SportsCenter career began.
He points out the cubicle area where he once shot a Christmas commercial with Stuart Scott, the one where Scott handed him an earpiece as a holiday gift. He identifies the exact staircase he descended every day, the door he pulled open to reach the studio, and the spot where he first crossed paths with Craig Kilborn.
The memories come quickly. Walking down the old hallway, he recalls hearing Dan Patrick sing Crowded House's 'Don't Dream It's Over.' He admits he's dating himself, but that's the point of the tour.
He flags the spot where he shot a SportsCenter commercial with gymnast Kerri Strug being passed from mascot to mascot. He notes that cubicles he remembers have been replaced by a cafeteria. Building layouts have shifted, but the bones of the place haven't.
Rich finds the old edit bays, which draw an audible reaction. Further down, he enters what he first thinks might be the main SportsCenter studio but corrects himself. It's the old Deuce, the original ESPN2 studio. He remembers doing NHL Tonight from that exact room when Bill Pidto called in sick.
Then he reaches a door with the same handle he remembers. He pulls it open, and the full weight of the moment registers. The Baseball Tonight set is there. The SportsCenter set is there. Bob Ley's old set is there. Rich stands in the room that launched his career and takes it in.
He closes the bit with a line that lands: 'How quickly can we have this all removed for tonight's show?' A beat, then: 'I'm back.'
The tour works because Rich doesn't try to varnish it. The walls are the same. The door handle is the same. Everything else has moved. That's the story.
