QB Guru John Beck’s Advice for Vikings QB JJ McCarthy in Wake of Kyler Signing

Rich lays it out for John Beck flat. Kyler Murray is going to be the week one starter in Minnesota. Not JJ McCarthy. The math is simple. You don't pay a quarterback $35 to $40 million guaranteed and bench him to see what your second-year guy looks like, especially after watching the last guy you let walk go win a Super Bowl somewhere else.

Beck, JJ's longtime quarterback coach, doesn't argue the depth chart. He argues the lens. The starter conversation, Beck says, is exactly the kind of noise JJ has to take off the table to do the work this offseason needs. McCarthy is coming off an injury, missed his entire rookie year, and is still building back. The mental side is where Beck wants him spending his reps. Mindset. Emotional regulation. The stuff JJ has been working on since adolescence and turned into one of his strengths.

Rich agrees JJ is a stud. Michigan guy. National champion. Big believer. But he keeps pulling the conversation back to reality. Kevin O'Connell is the right coach to be drafted by, no question. The dynamic in Minnesota, though, has changed. They didn't bring Kyler in as a backup plan. They brought him in to play.

Beck doesn't disagree. He just keeps the focus on what JJ can control. There will be an offseason competition on paper. What happens behind closed doors is between the coaching staff and the front office. JJ's job is to take whatever reps he gets and make them count. "Whatever reps you give me, I'm going to go do the absolute best I can," Beck says, channeling the message he's been giving his guy. Outcomes off the table. Daily decisions on it.

He pulls out a Brett Favre line that's stuck with him. We get paid a king's ransom to play a child's game. There's a secret in there, Beck tells Rich. The guys who play their best are the ones who keep loving the game the way they did when nobody was paying them for it. That's what he wants for nine.

Then Rich pivots. The guy drafted right in front of JJ, Michael Penix Jr in Atlanta, is in the same kind of squeeze. League minimum vet brought in over him. Different room, same wallpaper. Beck, careful not to be turned into the information desk, says Penix is working through his rehab and getting healthy. He'll be ready when the green light comes. The throughline is the same for both. Control your effort. Let the rest sort itself out.
