Farrelly's Dumb and Dumber Van

Peter Farrelly has a room's worth of props from his career. The original Kingpin ball is the one that sits at the top of the pile. There were two balls made for the movie, a main and a backup, standard practice. Farrelly kept the original. He lent it to his friend Patrick Lyons, who owns a Boston bowling alley with a full Kingpin wall, including the original wooden pins from Lyons's childhood.

About a year ago, the other Rose ball went up for auction. Rich guessed six figures. Farrelly said higher. The final price was $350,000. More than the whip from Indiana Jones. More than the hatchet from The Shining. More than the dress from Titanic. Rich pointed to the Bill Murray effect. The ball became iconic because Bill Murray held it.

Farrelly's wife said get the ball back from Patrick immediately. Farrelly pushed back with the old camp rule. Backsies. He gets to take it back.

No specific Mary ball from There's Something About Mary, but Farrelly does have the Mutt Cutts van from Dumb and Dumber. Two of those were built. His brother got one. He got the other. He picked up his daughter from high school in the Mutt Cutts van once. She was a freshman, and the last thing a freshman wants is attention. Every kid in the school came running over. She was humiliated. Still mad at him about it.

The backstory is that the van had just been taken home from a repair shop. Farrelly thought it would be funny to roll up in it. It was not funny to his daughter.

He ended up giving the van to his friend Tom Kartsotis, the founder of Shinola. Kartsotis has it parked in his basement. Rich and Farrelly both wear Shinola watches, a clean cross-promotion neither of them planned. Rich took his in for a repair. Farrelly confirmed the service is real.

The Kingpin ball is still with Lyons in Boston. The van is in Kartsotis's basement. Farrelly kept the friendships and let the props live where they would be appreciated. And his daughter is still holding a grudge, which is its own kind of legacy.
