The morning after Michigan cut down the nets in San Antonio, head coach Dusty May joined Rich for the conversation every Wolverine fan wanted to hear. Starting with the question every Wolverine fan was terrified to ask.
With the transfer portal open 24/7, the one name Michigan fans dread seeing is their own head coach. Rich put it plainly. Where do things stand? May didn't hedge.
His son Eli is a sophomore at Michigan. May said he can't see a scenario where he takes his kid away from graduating from the school. They moved around a lot when the family was young. Ann Arbor feels like home. Unless he ever feels he can't get the job done there, he's not going anywhere. He believes Michigan can be a consistent national championship contender.
Rich opened with a character read. Dusty May's comportment. No chest-pounding. He let the work do the talking. May laughed at the Dan Hurley comment earlier in the week calling him confident. He told the staff he wasn't sure if Hurley thought he was a confident guy or an arrogant ass. The joke landed.
The moment that crystallized his calm was when May walked out during warmups and the Michigan State student section let him have it. He said his instinct was to just sit there and take it rather than hide in the locker room. A photographer caught the shot and it became the image of the weekend.
May started his career as a student manager for Bob Knight at Indiana. Rich asked what Knight would think of a former IU manager hanging a banner for Michigan. May laughed. He said Knight's former staffers still text him after wins with variations of don't let the guys feel too good and make sure you don't eff it up. He thinks Knight would be proud because the throughline is still the teaching.
Rich asked about Charlie May splashing a three in the Final Four. May cared more about the long rebound on the previous possession. He's obsessed with guards rebounding. The shot came off an extra pass from Will Tschetter, who is Charlie's roommate. May was proudest of the bench reaction. Walk-ons putting in scout-team work all year getting a game moment.
Roster work had already started. The portal opened at 12:01 the night before. May's staff was scrolling before he made it back from media. They had him on the phone at 8 a.m. After the next roster is built, they'll take a breath and get up to Lake Charlevoix.
Rich closed with a confession. He stayed away from asking for May's time during the tournament and got jealous watching him on other shows. May fired back that he was a little hurt Rich had other coaches on. Then the reveal. Rich had assumed he tanked May's ratings the last time. May told Tom Wyroba to funnel requests better next time.
One fewer coach in the portal because Rich kept him five extra minutes.
