Michigan Alum Rich Eisen Reacts to UNC Hiring Michael Malone in Wake of Dusty May's Tar Heels Snub

UNC Hires Malone, Michigan Exhales

North Carolina hired Michael Malone, and Rich reacted live on air with a mix of surprise and a familiar Michigan fan take on why Dusty May is not going anywhere.

Malone has 510 wins as a pro head coach, a title with the Nuggets in Denver, and no apparent connection to North Carolina. Per Pete Thamel, he's the next lead man in Chapel Hill. Rich's first question was the obvious one. Why would any pro coach want to leave the professional ranks for the one-year-contract, transfer-portal chaos of modern college basketball? Unless the deal is monster, the math doesn't add up.

He used the news to re-litigate a point he had gone all-in on the previous week. The idea that Dusty May would bolt Michigan for North Carolina the moment the tournament ended never made sense to him. Pete's reporting over the weekend confirmed it. May was out of the UNC mix and had already informed Michigan he wasn't pursuing other jobs.

The reason cited was that Michigan had advanced in the tournament. Rich hopes that's not the actual reason. His preferred version is that Michigan is lining up the bag. Tommy Lloyd got the bag. Nate Oats got the bag. Arizona and Alabama just handed their coaches massive raises. What do they all have in common? They got the BTA from Dusty May in the tournament. Which means May is the next domino, and leaving that kind of leverage unclaimed makes no sense.

The recruiting case is already on the board. During the Fab Five alt-cast of the Arizona-Michigan game, Brandon McCoy from Sierra Canyon announced he's going to Michigan. Elliot Cadeau already left North Carolina to play at Michigan and is playing in the Final Four. That's a point guard from Chapel Hill choosing Ann Arbor, which flips the traditional prestige argument on its head.

Hoskins floated the only real counter. The Jumpman logo on Dusty May's chest. The Jordan Brand lineage. The pull of coaching where Michael Jordan played. Rich pushed back hard, then conceded the obvious. It is Michael Jordan. But the question is who actually weighs that in 2026. A 56-year-old watching old clips, or a 17-year-old recruit deciding between bags?

He landed on a simple closing. The modern game requires a coach to be in place when the portal opens. You can't tell a recruit to come to our school and we'll let you know who the coach is later. Carolina had to move. Malone solves that problem for them.

Michigan's problem, if there is one, is writing the check to keep May where the roster, the NIL, the facilities, and the recruiting pitch are already working. On current evidence, he's not leaving.
