The first pre-draft trade of note landed with a thud on both coasts. Dexter Lawrence, the Giants' unicorn defensive tackle and the hold out at the center of a standoff in East Rutherford, is now a Cincinnati Bengal. According to ESPN research, it marks the first time in the common draft era, dating back to 1966, that the Bengals have surrendered a top-10 pick for a player. Same ownership group. Same Brown family. Different posture entirely.
Rich walks through the NFL Network research that frames the deal. Lawrence leads the league in double teams faced on pass rushes over the last five seasons with 1,103. Jeffrey Simmons is second. His new teammate B.J. Hill is third. The message from Cincinnati to Joe Burrow is direct, this is us telling you we mean business.
The subtext matters. Trey Hendrickson did not get paid and is now wearing Ravens purple. Burrow has been fielding questions, in measured press conference tones, about his happiness and his future. Rich frames the acquisition as an answer to Burrow's growing fatigue with carrying everything on his shoulder, losing 41 to 40, and getting hit behind a leaky front. Good luck running on Hill and Lawrence. Good luck doubling both.
For the Giants, fifth and tenth overall is not a bad return. It is enough draft capital to fill holes for a young roster, enough to move up if they want to, enough to take two Ohio State players or one on each side of the ball. It also creates flexibility along the offensive line. Rich points out that two firsts sits in the neighborhood of what it would take to move up to the first overall pick, though New York has no need to.
The contract context is tidy. Lawrence agreed to one year at 28 million spread over three, a deal the Giants would not do. Cincinnati did. Bengals fans watching the 10th overall pick get flipped for a player coming off a half sack and eight quarterback hits can point to last year as an outlier. The prior seasons tell a different story.
The deal also pulls Caleb Downs off the Bengals' board at 10. The Giants now join six teams, including their stadium co-tenant Jets, with multiple first round choices. Sexy Dexy is in Cincinnati. The Giants pick twice in the top 10. And Joe Burrow has his answer before he goes full Carson Palmer.
