Cousins to Vegas Flips the QB Board

Rich lays out a theory on the Kirk Cousins signing in Las Vegas that reframes how every other quarterback domino falls. Players make decisions based on opportunity, not just loyalty or money, and Cousins picking the Raiders tells us something specific about the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Rich's read. The Steelers are one hundred percent waiting for Aaron Rodgers. They have backed themselves into a corner.

The logic runs like this. Cousins just watched a team sign him to a nine-figure contract, then draft a quarterback first overall with every intention of starting the rookie as soon as possible. He knows exactly what that movie looks like. And now he is walking into Las Vegas, where the Raiders hold a first-overall draft slot that screams they are taking a quarterback.

For Cousins to accept that landing spot again, one of two things must be true. Either Pittsburgh was not an option because the Steelers would not fully guarantee his deal, or Cousins knew that spot was already reserved for Rodgers.

Either way, Art Rooney might need to move his expectation goalposts. Rooney said he wanted an answer before the draft. Rich thinks the Steelers might just have to change their timeline if Cousins reading the room this way is accurate.

Rich does leave room for a twist. Rodgers could pop up on Pat McAfee's show tomorrow and announce he is back in the league, in which case all of this speculation becomes moot. Rich says he thinks that is what will happen.

There is another layer. McCarthy was hired because of his ability to groom young quarterbacks. That is the avatar. And the quarterback McCarthy is trying to bring in to Pittsburgh is a 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers.

Rich plays this from multiple angles. Cousins to Pittsburgh, with Will Howard in the room, was a move Rich thought made sense. Cousins heading to Vegas instead points strongly at one conclusion. The Steelers are waiting on Rodgers, and they have built the roster, the coaching staff, and the timeline around that bet.

If Rodgers says no, Pittsburgh has a problem. If he says yes, the AFC quarterback carousel just stopped turning.

Rich leans toward the yes. He also hands the hot seat to Tom Pelissero, who is coming up later in the hour to break down the same puzzle.
