Lavonte David on the Eat a W Speech

Lavonte David sits down with the show to dig into his favorite Bruce Arians and Jameis Winston stories, and both answers deliver in the way only a 14-year vet can.

Arians first. David's memory is a team meeting and the ME chart, Bruce's mental errors board. The rule was simple. Appear on the board more than once and BA would dog cuss you out in front of the room. David loved it. Player coach energy. Accountability out loud. He had never seen a head coach operate that way, and given what the Bucs had lost in prior years from dumb mistakes, the emphasis hit. No dumb MFers on the football team. If you keep landing on the board, you are gone.

Rich asks the obvious follow-up. Did Arians ever put Tom Brady in that barrel in front of the team? David's answer is a laugh and a clean no. Tom really didn't mess up. If he did, it stayed behind closed doors.

Then the Jameis story. David picks one that got to the edge of spilling into a fight. Hot day of Tampa training camp. Offense and defense going at it. Practice ending. Gerald McCoy trying to rally the group to keep pushing. Jameis fires back that Gerald plays D-line and wouldn't be doing much anyway. McCoy is furious. David had never seen him that pissed off. The defense had to calm both of them down.

That leads to the Jameis speech everyone remembers. Eat a W.

David confirms the myth from the inside. The infamous eat a W speech was one of the most insane things he had seen in his career. Jameis meant well. He thought it was going to hype the room up. It did not go how he wanted.

David describes watching it live. Jameis started moving around, getting animated, taking over the circle-up. David started drifting backward. Ah, no way. And if you look up the rest of that game, you know how it went.

The throughline for David is that he genuinely loves Jameis. Authentic guy. You get what you get out of him. No performance, no polish, just the quarterback being exactly who he is. The eat a W moment was not a joke to him. It came from a real place. It just did not translate.

Rich wraps with a pivot to Jameis showing up at the Netflix and Major League Baseball season opener doing paparazzi stuff. Which, David's face says, tracks completely.
