Ozzie Albies keeps roughly 100 koi in his backyard. The show decided that qualified him for an in-studio quiz, six photographs deep.
The Braves second baseman went 5-for-6 on Name That Fish, and the one he missed was the one he saw first.
Photo one stopped him cold. Albies recognized it on sight. He had wanted to own one. He had a story ready about a friend named Taylor whose order arrived dead, only for the fish to start swimming the next morning. What he could not summon was the name.
"Um, give me one second, I'll get it for you," Albies said. He took his in-show pitch clock disengagement, the one Rich allowed by rule. Then he asked to come back to it.
The rest of the round went quickly. He named the arowana from photo two on sight and called it a lucky fish. He landed the clearfin lionfish on photo three with a Deuce Bigalow nudge from Rich. He recognized the flowerhorn on photo four cold and warned that it is mean enough to try to kill anything in the tank with it.
Photo five was salt water and almost stumped him. Rich offered the hint that you look up to the heavens to see who is up there.
"Angelfish," Albies said. He learned in the same breath that there is an angelfish in both salt water and fresh water, which Rich told Chris to write down for next time.
Photo six was a peacock bass, one of Albies's favorites. He called it without hesitation.
Back to photo one. Rich gave him a final hint. Six letters. Starts with a D.
"D, I, dis," Albies said, before time ran out on the in-show pitch clock.
It was the discus fish.
"How can I forget the discus fish?" Albies said.
He took the strike, and Rich gave him credit for the other five. Few baseball players, Rich noted, get to take that route to a .833 average on a Thursday afternoon.
