Tessitore: WWE Is the Original Crossover

Joe Tessitore pulls up to make his case for WrestleMania 42, and his frame is bigger than wrestling. He argues WWE has been doing for 40 years what every sport is trying to do now.

His thesis is clean. WWE is the greatest merging of sports and entertainment, and it is what everyone at the network level aspires to be. Amazing characters. Long-arc storytelling. Plot twists. Drama. Betrayal. Revenge. A romantic relationship the coverage can orbit around.

Tessitore draws a direct line between WWE and the cutaway era of the NFL. The Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift cuts. The lionizing of Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, Drew Brees. Those are characters in a long-arc story, built and delivered the way any good serial drama builds and delivers.

WWE does it on purpose every single week. That is what puts the hook in the mouth, reels the audience in, and then delivers the crescendo at the event. WrestleMania is the reveal week, the moment every storyline pays off at once.

He compares the experience to Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, The Wire. If you consume WWE the way you would consume those shows, paying attention to plot and character and story, the product is compelling on its own merits. This week in Las Vegas is built for it. A 6 p.m. start time he prefers on the app. Pyro ready. All the celebrity crossover arriving at once. Lil Yachty with Trick Williams. Jelly Roll in the building. Everyone coming out of the woodwork to align with their guys.

Tessitore will be on air for roughly 90 straight hours, a number he delivers with a smile Rich has come to expect. Rich nods to the legend of the iron bladder, the kind of credential only a play-by-play lifer can claim. Tessitore riffs back, noting the Iron Sheik was originally billed as the Iron Bladder on the indies in Minnesota before WWE told him to grow the hair and sharpen the gimmick.

The bit lands because the framing works. Tessitore is selling WrestleMania the way he would sell Monday Night Football. Characters. Story. Stakes. Spectacle. The only difference is the script is intentional and the crescendo is guaranteed, which in his telling is exactly why sports coverage keeps trying to look more like it.
