What Actually Happens with Maxx Crosby

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler goes under the hood on the Maxx Crosby situation, and the answer he lands on is not the flashy one.

Rich asks the what is more likely question. Either Crosby stays in Vegas, the emotional whiplash of being traded and then not traded trumps whatever emotions got him shopped in the first place, or this whole thing is a smokescreen designed to get his trade compensation back up to what Baltimore was willing to pay for him, and he ends up somewhere else this season.

Fowler leans toward Crosby staying, at least in the short term. He does not sense major movement or any active plotting by the Raiders to move him in the next few weeks. He has talked to people on both sides of the situation, Crosby's camp and the Raiders, and both sides seem fully comfortable moving forward with each other right now.

The caveat is the calendar. There are windows where this could change. The draft is one. If draft week creates urgency and teams start calling with stronger offers, no longer trying to buy low, that could move the needle. If the Raiders can get compensation similar to what Baltimore was offering, or at least in the ballpark, that is the conversation. They are not getting two ones anymore. But something in the neighborhood, either around the draft or closer to the season, is on the table.

Then Fowler introduces the third option, which he says he has talked to several teams about. Crosby goes into the year, plays a healthy stretch, shows he is moving well on the knee, stacks some sacks. The trade deadline comes around. The Raiders are sitting at six and two, or some version of competitive, and the deadline becomes the big move window. A team that is close and needs a pass rusher to get over the hump could make a major offer at that point.

That, Fowler says, is a real possibility. But right now, the Raiders are comfortable with Max. They have told him as such. They are going to move forward. His lean is that Crosby stays, for now.
