Wilson Bethel Checks Rich's Tennis Brag

Wilson Bethel is on the show to promote Daredevil: Born Again, but tennis takes over fast. Bethel plays twice a week at a high level. He used to teach the sport. His all-time favorite is Rafa Nadal. His current favorite is Carlos Alcaraz. He admits, after being needled, that he also loves Pau Gasol and Jon Rahm, so maybe there is a Spanish pattern at play.

What he appreciates about Alcaraz is pure athleticism. Power. Speed. Mental toughness. Endurance. The ability to get to any ball on the court. Then Bethel notices that Alcaraz has been losing, dropping matches at Indian Wells and Miami to players including Jannik Sinner, who Rich notes literally looks like Gumby in green in the photo on screen. Alcaraz, Bethel concludes, is vulnerable.

Which brings him to his boast.

Rich has been telling viewers he could get one point off Alcaraz. One single point. Bethel entertains it. There is a world, he says, where an infinitely inferior player beats a great one. Something about the randomness breaks the great player's brain. Once confidence is gone, it is game over. If Rich could find some kind of witchery, some trick shot with impossible spin, he could actually steal a point.

Rich loves the framing but corrects the strategy. He is not going to out-spin Alcaraz on clay or grass. What he can do is get in people's grills. Get in between their temples. Spanish is not his first language but he says he can manage.

Here is the plan, credit to Mardy Fish who gave it to him. Rich will keep serving. Alcaraz will keep closing. It will get to 4-0, Alcaraz up. Rich's last service game before the match ends. Alcaraz is standing as close to the service line as possible. Rich winds up. And he serves directly at Alcaraz. A bullet. Even the greatest returner in the world cannot get out of the way.

If you get hit with the ball, whose point is it? It is your point. Rich gets his one. And in that mental-collapse moment where Alcaraz has been humbled by a sports broadcaster, the whole thing might crumble. The match is Rich's to lose.

Bethel pronounces the plan genius. The rest of the show calls it delusion. The bit works because Rich delivers it with the total sincerity of a man who has been rehearsing it for years.

High Line is next. Tennis takes another few minutes. Big money sports can wait.
