Dan Quinn - “Extra Hunger” Fueling Jayden Daniels after Injury-Riddled ’25 Season

Dan Quinn joined The Rich Eisen Show with a clear read on his quarterback heading into year three. Jayden Daniels, the Washington head coach explained, has the rare trait of being the same guy every day. His demeanor doesn't shift. His sensibility doesn't shift. His fire doesn't shift.

That consistency is the foundation. What changes the equation this season is what came before it.

Last year was the most frustrating stretch of Daniels's young career. Injuries cost him time. He had to watch instead of play. Quinn said anyone who has gone through that comes back with something extra in the tank.

"There is a little extra hunger that comes back," Quinn told Rich. "That's human nature."

Quinn views his job as stoking that fire without manufacturing it. He doesn't pull press clippings. He doesn't recite outside narratives. He pushes through the work itself, the location of the ball, the accuracy on a given throw, the standards that separate elite from very good.

"Not any narrative from outside," Quinn said, "but knowing what he's capable of, I'm qualified to do that push."

Rich pressed on the mechanics of motivating an already elite competitor. Quinn kept it internal. He talked about the satisfaction a coach gets from moving a player from point A to point B, and said Daniels is exactly the kind of player worth investing that energy in.

The conversation turned to two of Quinn's veteran leaders, Bobby Wagner and Von Miller. Both have futures to figure out. Miller has talked openly about wanting to be a general manager someday and has spent time with Adam Peters, but he also wants to keep playing. Wagner is the reigning Walter Payton Man of the Year.

Quinn was asked whether either could return in burgundy and gold. He didn't close any doors.

"For players like that, you never close the door," he said. "They are remarkable, Rich, not just as ball players, but as teammates."

Quinn lit up describing what Miller brings beyond pass rush production. Sit with him for an afternoon on hand placement and technique, Quinn said, and you'd realize he could coach interior linemen too. In meeting rooms, Miller will share insight unprompted. He has the ability not just to know the technique, but to articulate how to apply it.

On Wagner, Quinn was even more emphatic. He called him one of the very best leaders he has ever been around. Standards as a player. Standards as a teammate. Preparation, mentally and physically. Practice habits. Quinn said when he thinks of Wagner, he thinks of tackling, and that he has used Wagner as a teaching example throughout his coaching career.

Rich noted that Wagner could probably download his knowledge to young linebacker Jayon Brown's running mate. Quinn agreed, and broadened it. The fun part of the NFL, he said, is when veterans give back to one another. He pointed to Zach Ertz as another player whose perspective from inside the helmet has taught him things over the years.

Ertz, Quinn confirmed, is rehabbing well from the knee injury that ended his last season. Like Wagner and Miller, he has a lot left to prove.

The through-line of Quinn's appearance was simple. Veteran wisdom, internal fire, and a quarterback whose hunger just got sharper.
