Albert Breer: These 4 Teams Could Pursue Brendan Sorsby in Supplemental Draft

Albert Breer thinks four NFL teams are in real position to spend a draft pick on Brendan Sorsby this summer, and his list says a lot about the gap between the 2026 quarterback class and the 2027 one.

The teams Breer identified were the Jets, Cardinals, Browns, and Dolphins. All four, in his read, deferred the position in the 2026 draft and built a 2027 runway instead. The Jets bought time with Geno Smith. The Dolphins added Malik Willis behind their starter. The Cardinals and Browns took the patchwork route too.

If one of those teams looks at Sorsby and decides he is as good as the projected 2027 first-rounders, Breer said, they could move a second-round pick to get him through the supplemental draft. They would also get him in their building for a year before he ever plays a snap.

Rich pushed on the obvious complication. This is a quarterback currently entangled in an NIL breach-of-contract lawsuit, on a medical leave of absence for a gambling addiction, who has admitted to gambling on his school's teams while at Indiana, and is now represented by Jeffrey Kessler.

"The first supplemental draft choice in seven years," Rich said, "will most likely be used in this quarterback-needy league on a kid currently involved in a lawsuit, sued by his school, taking a medical leave over a gambling addiction."

Breer's answer started with Kessler.

"I don't want people to make the mistake here of thinking that Kessler was brought in purely to sue the NFL," Breer said. The presence of one of sports law's most aggressive antitrust attorneys is, in Breer's read, about accelerating a decision from the NCAA, not the NFL.

Sorsby wants to play in 2026. Texas Tech wants him to. The Kessler hire is about working the NCAA toward a settlement, possibly a defined suspension, that lets him take the field.

If the NCAA holds the line, the rule is unambiguous. Gamble on any team at your school and your eligibility is gone. That sends Sorsby to a decision tree, sue the NCAA for an injunction in a Texas Tech-friendly jurisdiction, or go to the NFL with Kessler in his corner.

Then the question is what the NFL does with him.

Breer pointed to the Terrelle Pryor precedent. When Pryor entered the supplemental draft after his Ohio State suspension, the NFL matched the NCAA penalty. A six-game ban came down because that was the NCAA number. If the NCAA permanently banishes Sorsby, the NFL will have to decide how to handle a player with no NCAA discipline to mirror.

The legal structural piece is that the NFL is a trade association. It cannot block employment outright. Past supplemental-draft cases like Josh Gordon's drug suspension show the league has consistently let players in and left the decision to the teams.

Breer added a wrinkle. The Steelers, with Aaron Rodgers expected and Mike McCarthy as head coach, might be drafting in the low 20s in 2027. If Sorsby projects as a top-five pick that year, a 23rd-overall pick this summer becomes a real conversation in Pittsburgh.

On talent, Breer relayed a quote from one offensive coordinator that started with hedging and ended with a name.

"I hate to use the names Caleb Williams and Patrick Mahomes," the coach said, "but I think this kid has some of that."

The clock matters. The deadline to declare is expected to be June 30.
