49ers Insider Matt Maiocco Talks Kittle, Aiyuk, Mike Evans & More with Rich

Matt Maiocco is calling in from the NFL annual meeting in Arizona, and Rich wants to start with the Brandon Aiyuk of it all. Jed York's public posture is essentially Humpty Dumpty. Put it back together. Maiocco does not buy that those words landed cleanly with John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan. The union effectively ended last December when the team placed Aiyuk on reserve left squad rather than activate him and protect a $27 million guarantee. Maiocco reads York's comments as a message to the other 31 teams. We are fine keeping him. If you want him, come get him now and give us something. Even something small. A seventh-round pick would do.

Why did it ever break? Maiocco says he honestly does not know, and the only person who can really answer is Aiyuk. Contentious negotiation, late signing, missed offseason, an injury just as the football was coming around, and a rehab that went sideways when Aiyuk did not stay under team supervision. Even close friends in the building were not sure what the impetus was for a rupture this deep with a front office led by a Hall of Fame player in Lynch.

From there, Rich pivots to the receiver room rebuild. Two years ago it was Deebo Samuel, Aiyuk on a 1,300-yard season, and Jauan Jennings making money catches. None of them are around. The 49ers signed Mike Evans to essentially trade places with Jennings, added Christian Kirk to fill a long-running slot need, and still have Ricky Pearsall in the pipeline. Maiocco notes the room already looks meaningfully better than the unit that fueled the fifth-best passing offense in football last year.

On George Kittle, Lynch raised eyebrows by floating Week 1. Maiocco says the Achilles tear was high on the leg and did not require drilling into the heel, which trended the recovery shorter. But Kittle is past 30, and the schedule opens with a 16-hour flight to Melbourne against the Rams and a 16-hour flight back. Right now, Kittle is in Oregon playing golf without a boot. Rehab is on plan or ahead.

Maiocco lays out the bigger frame. After a year of subtractions, this offseason is about additions and the return of Brock Purdy, Bosa, Fred Warner, and Mike McGlinchey-era cornerstones. It feels like a last run with this band, which is why Lynch is openly optimistic about finishing a Trent Williams deal before the draft.

Rich closes on the substation. The 49ers brought in an independent scientist, lab-grade equipment, Doc Brown white coat and all, and got a clean reading. Lynch added that no free agent ever raised it. Rich still wants the carpet ripped out. The Seahawks celebrated a Super Bowl in that locker room. With Jed York already spending $9 million on training-staff upgrades, get the carpet too. This house is clean.
